High Quality Coatings for Plastic Surfaces
In the course of its strategy to expand, Impreglon UK took over Optical Coating Technologies (OCT), the coating specialist in Tamworth, on January 1, 2014.
Optical Coating Technologies specializes in technologies and materials that create high quality surfaces on plastics. The surfaces can be transparent or highly reflective, depending on the specific application. They increase the substrate‘s resistance to scratching and chemicals, prevent fogging and glare, and enhance the anti-static properties. Depending on the coating, multiple properties can be combined to create the ideal finish.
An example from the automotive industry demonstrates the many uses of the OCT technology: A renowned automobile manufacturer approached OCT with the request to coat the top of the gear shift in a car to prevent the surface from being damaged by lotion, cosmetics and perspiration. And the coating had to be transparent. The markings indicating the various gears on the gear shift, made of metalized polycarbonate, posed a special challenge. Applying the coating is the last step in the production process. This meant that the ways to bond the coating were limited. OCT has many different application methods, allowing it to treat the very soft polycarbonate in a two-part coating process. The ideal coating material was determined to be polysiloxane, a type of silicone that can be applied as a layer less than 10 μm thick. The result: outstanding resistance to scratching and the ultimate protection.
Most OCT coatings have a poly-siloxane base. But gold, silver, copper and aluminum surfaces are available as well.
Optical Coating Technologies has ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certification, and with its many years of experience, it is a highly beneficial addition to the Impreglon family.
